Because my Uncle Jake Link was named after his father, he was sometimes called “Junior” and sometimes addressed as “June”
His bedroom was at the back of the 4435 Crittenden Drive Home, just off the kitchen. I thought the most fascinating thing in that room was the round ball which he had fashioned by stripping the tinfoil off the backs of chewing gum wrappers. He was always very proud to show me how much it had been enlarged since my last visit and took delight in seeing my amazed look when he tossed it up toward the ceiling.
In later years, I learned that the toy truck he had displayed on the top of his dresser was probably the same one that got him on my mother’s “naughty list” when she worked at Stewart’s as a teenager. She came home one evening to find he had dumped her treasured talcum powder on a windowsill and was using it as a dusty road to roll his truck.
I am not sure what name she called him that evening but I am sure after her admonishment, he found other play roads to adventure his truck.
