There were not that many photographs taken in 1961. I wish I had taken more. Life got busy and I neglected to record our lives in Louisville, Kentucky. Miles was stationed in Japan. D.J. and I were staying with Grandma Furgason on Sherman Avenue. and I was pregnant with Duion.

A black and white photo of Grandpa and Grandma Link with D.J. is one treasure that I cherish. They are standing in front of Grandpa Link’s shed that Jake Dillman built for him when Jacob Link’s previous shed was taken down due to an Expressway ramp cutting through his back and side yard. Grandpa Link is holding D.J.’s shoulder to restrain the excited youngster to keep from darting out of the photo frame.

Another black and white photo that brings back fond memories is one of Molter J. Kernen and D.J. posing in the McKay Street back garden behind the garage. It was the last summer garden Mr. Kernen would grow. He lets D.J. hold the hoe that had been used for many seasons to tend to weeds and cut furrows in the ground.

I recall standing beside my Father on the back porch that summer as we looked out at that garden.  I admonished myself for thinking, “What are we going to do with this garden when he is gone?”
