There is nothing like the Holiday of July 4, 2002, to make me recall past years. And because D.J. had not remembered the incident of Duyn having to have stitches after being injured on the head by a TV, I feel I should record the highlights of that episode.
Furthermore, this past week, I had the opportunity of talking to four Grandchildren, Two were in Japan and two were in Florida. To their parents I just want to say, the handwriting is on the wall! I am so proud of those Grandchildren as I was proud of the four Furgasons who were in my case for many years. I consider the Furgasons to be geniuses and I recognize that quality in these Grandchildren.
And if I ever get depressed, I will recall my conversation with Duion a few days ago when he spoke of Karen and the need for her to work on her social skills. (I am pausing to regain composure because my abdomen hurts from repressed attacks o “ha ha has” and tears are streaming down my face!” All I could say to Duion was “Good Luck!” He will surely need it.
D.J. and Najla get a “Good Luck” wish for Nick. Kelsey and Tristan are cunning and calculating with their genius traits far beyond their years. Nick and Karen are just a little more boisterous about their manner of living.
The TV incident with Duyn happened when we were living on Daly Street. I believe Sgt. Furgason was in Okinawa at the time. I thought all three boys were playing in the middle bedroom, but perhaps D.J. was elsewhere.
Anyway, the small TV was sitting in the inset above the built-in drawers. Duyn had tied a string to a TV knob and was running his G.i. JOE down the line when something happened and the TV came down giving him a glancing blow which resulted in a hurried trip to the Naval Hospital at Camp LeJeune for stitches.
It is very embarrassing to tell a corpsman your youngest son was injured by a G.I. JOE and a TV.
