And then there was the morning that I received a call from D.J. who was at Durrett High School on Preston Street in Louisville, Kentucky.
D.J. explained that his friend needed a ride home. The friend made the mistake of thinking classmates would enjoy meeting his pet snake. The boy was ordered to take the pet home.
The two boys sat in the back seat of my car and I kept glancing in the rearview mirror as I drove. The young friend was tenderly holding his snake. The boy smiled and reassured me, “Don’t worry, Mrs. Furgason. I think he is falling asleep.”
